Invitation to FLOW Speech in Austin
by John Mackey, June 5, 2008 | Permalink
Just a quick heads up that John Mackey will be speaking on Conscious Capitalism in Austin, Texas on June 12, 2008. It’s actually rare to have the opportunity to hear John speak in his hometown. The event serves as a fundraiser for FLOW, a non-profit organization that John co-founded in 2004. John’s talk will be followed by an extensive dialogue with Tami Simon, CEO of Sounds True; questions from the audience are invited. Click here for more specifics and to buy tickets. A limited number are still available. For those not in Austin, stay tuned for a multiple CD recording of the event to be released in 2009.

John,
It was a great event. Your vision of Conscious Capitalism/Business is inspiring and clearly well thought through, and the frank Q&A afterwards was insightful. Post-meeting Appreciations in particular sound like a fantastically simple but powerful way to at least partially inoculate an enterprise against politics, bureaucracy, and egos run amok.
During Q&A, you mentioned the “entrepreneurial opportunity” to help organizations accelerate the personal growth and evolution of their employees. I don’t think anybody has the whole answer there, but I do think a major element is keeping employees in the optimally productive, challenged, and growing Flow zone (a la Mihály Csíkszentmihályi) between bored and overwhelmed/burned out - something that self-organizing internal markets are likely to be a lot better at than hierarchical command-and-control by bosses. A tough goal, but one that new collaboration and community technology has made a whole lot more possible in just the last few years.
I also enjoyed our short conversation at the reception on Gary Hamel’s concept of Management 2.0 enabled by software, and hope you found the chart pack I dropped off at HQ of interest. Dr. Hamel calls it “management’s moonshot challenge,” which it certainly is - and Conscious Business concepts should definitely be a part of it.
Sincerest regards,

Hello John, Check out this week’s Supermarket News’ blog highlighting the results of the World Society for the Protection of Animals survey of supermarkets availability of “humane” food labels. Whole Foods ranked #1. Congratulations!
